Religious Education

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Nelson Mandela

Religious Education at Bitterne Church of England Primary

At Bitterne Church of England Primary School, we believe Religious Education helps children understand themselves, others and the diverse world in which they live.

Guided by our Christian vision and values of Hope, Courage and Creativity, children explore Christianity alongside other major world religions and worldviews. Through discussion, enquiry and reflection, they learn to respect different beliefs, think deeply and ask thoughtful questions.

We want every child to leave Bitterne as a respectful, compassionate and curious young person who values diversity, celebrates difference and understands the importance of kindness, community and belonging.

Religious Education in Action

Our Curriculum

We follow the Hampshire Living Difference syllabus alongside Understanding Christianity.

Children develop their knowledge and understanding through an enquiry-based approach, exploring Christianity in depth alongside Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Learning is brought to life through stories, art, music, drama, role play, visits to places of worship and opportunities to meet visitors from different faith communities. These first-hand experiences help children deepen their understanding, ask thoughtful questions and appreciate the rich diversity of the world around them.

How Parents Can Help

You can support your child by talking about their learning, encouraging questions, visiting places of worship and discussing different beliefs and traditions with curiosity and respect.
