Our Ambitious Curriculum

At Bitterne CE Primary School, our whole curriculum is designed to be ambitious, engaging, and motivational, enabling our pupils to explore and understand the world around them. The curriculum promotes diversity and encourages the development of essential knowledge and vocabulary; it prepares them for the next stage of their learning journey; and equips them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attributes to thrive as future citizens.

Our curriculum, based on the Lion Pathways framework, goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum, providing our pupils with a breadth of learning experiences that challenge and inspire them. The curriculum is structured in a progressive manner, with a clear focus on developing both substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time. This enables the children to build a deep understanding of the world around them.  Connections and links are made across subject disciplines each half term, ensuring a coherent and meaningful learning experience for all.

The curriculum begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where the areas of learning serve as the building blocks for the next key stages. This seamless transition ensures that our pupils' learning is continuous and that they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

In addition to the subject knowledge requirements, we also focus on developing life-long learning skills:

  • Creative Thinking
  • Challenge
  • Curiosity
  • Evaluation
  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • Teamwork

The children are taught, through their subject learning, how to be successful in these skills, preparing them for future lives.

Celebration

Each term we celebrate the outcomes of our learning at our Great Exhibition.  We actively encourage families to share in their child's learning and as such set home learning projects linked to the terms focus. At the Great Exhibition, we showcase this work.

Also, we set up activities in classrooms to share what we have been learning in school.
