PSHE including RSHE
“Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.”
Jawaharlal Nehru
At Bitterne CE Primary School, we believe in the holistic development of every child. We want all children to leave our school with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to make confident and informed choices. We place strong emphasis on developing confidence and resilience so pupils feel prepared for the range of experiences they may encounter in life. We also support children to build positive relationships and understand how they can make a positive contribution to society, guided by our school values of hope, courage, and creativity.
Our PSHE curriculum is based on The Story Project Curriculum. This carefully designed whole-school approach deepens children’s understanding of personal, social, health, and economic education and supports them to develop empathy and respect for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. Oracy and literacy are embedded throughout, with reading placed at the heart of learning. High-quality texts are used to explore themes, support discussion, and develop understanding.

Lessons are taught in a safe and inclusive way, allowing children to explore emotions, build empathy, and develop strategies for self-regulation. Open discussion is encouraged so children feel confident to share ideas and reflect on their own experiences as well as those of others.
Our curriculum teaches children how to stay healthy, safe, and prepared for life in modern Britain. We teach the full statutory content of Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education, and Health Education as set out by the Government. Our Relationships and Sex Education curriculum is bespoke to our community and was developed in partnership with parents and our local church. Learning reflects real life, includes relevant and current themes, and encourages discussion, reflection, and thoughtful debate so children feel informed, confident, and supported.
