SMSC and British Values

"It is crucial for individual pupils and it is crucial for society as a whole. Most teachers would see it as the heart of what education is all about – helping pupils grow and develop as people."

Ofsted

Bitterne CE Primary School is committed to providing a well-rounded education that nurtures the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our pupils. Embedded within our curriculum and school ethos are the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Developing Character and Citizenship

Our curriculum aims to develop self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence in our pupils, empowering them to make informed choices and understand the difference between right and wrong. Through a range of engaging lessons and activities, we encourage our pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour and to contribute positively to the school and wider community.

Promoting British Values

At Bitterne CE Primary, we have a deep respect for the civil and criminal laws of Britain, and we work to ensure our pupils understand the importance of these laws and the role of public services in upholding them. We foster an appreciation for democracy, providing opportunities for pupils to have their voices heard through the school council and other forums.

Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion

Underpinning our approach is a steadfast commitment to mutual respect and tolerance. We celebrate the diversity of cultures, faiths, and beliefs represented within our school community, encouraging our pupils to develop a deep appreciation for the richness of human experience. Through this, we aim to prepare our pupils to thrive in the multicultural society of modern Britain.

Embedding SMSC in School Life

SMSC development is not taught as a standalone subject but is instead woven throughout our curriculum and school life. From our daily acts of collective worship to the way we interact with one another, the principles of SMSC and British values are evident in the ethos and everyday experiences of our school.
