History

‘People without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.’ Marcus Garvey

Our aim is to encourage children to develop an appreciation of and understanding from the earliest times to the present day. We aim to deliver a history curriculum that is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. We aim for it to stimulate children’s curiosity about the past, increasing and developing their historical skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes; thereby developing their interest in the past, arousing their curiosity and motivation to become active learners with a passion for history.

Through love, the children will develop awe and wonder about the past and a fascination about how human interaction has developed over time.

In trust, the children will learn about how they are now the keepers of the past. Who, in order to keep history alive, will need to continue passing on stories of the past.

Through forgiveness, the children will learn about how we all have a responsibility to respect the past, even if the views differ from our own. We want our children to leave Bitterne with enquiring and broad minds and an understanding that the modern world we live in today is moulded by the actions and continuous movements of people from the past.

Ultimately, we want children to have confidence that our understanding is forever evolving.
